You may have heard wax pen and dab pen used to mean the same thing and even though they are frequently used interchangeably, you might be wondering what exactly makes a wax pen or dab pen. Though most people consider cannabis wax pens and dab pens to be very similar there are essential differences. So, let’s get into the similarities and the differences between the two.

Wax Pen vs Dab Pen

Both devices are vaporizers that can be used with concentrates. When describing awax pen vs dab pen, they’re both similar looking pen-like units that have a type of chamber into which the concentrate is placed. This chamber is also called an atomizer. The atomizer will heat to a specific temperature so that vapor is produced. From there, it’s inhaled through the mouthpiece.

Both wax and dab pens are portable vaporizers that can be taken when on the go. The main difference between the two is that wax pens can accommodate all kinds of wax, while dab pens mostly refer to cartridges, or atomizers that are only compatible with the sticky and gooey consistency wax.

“Wax” is a term to refer to all types of concentrates. Each concentrate has their own potency and consistency and are made using a variety of processes to produce. The most well-known kinds of wax, or concentrates, are shatter, crumble, budder, resin and rosin. Distillate, which is usually found in prefilled cartridges, or distillate vaporizers, will fall into the “wax” category as well, but this substance is extremely concentrated, and a gooey honey like consistency. Dab pens typically are designed to handle just this type of consistency, while wax pens are able to vaporize any type of concentrate.

What is a Wax pen?

The main components of a wax pen are the battery and the chamber or atomizer. Within the chamber of a wax pen is typically a pad, or plate where the concentrate is placed. Wax pens chambers are typically made with ceramic or quartz, as both these materials produce amazing tasting wax, and retain heat very well.

Wax pen batteries also tend to come with a wider range of temperature options, since each type of concentrate consistency is vaporized best at a different level. This allows the user to be able to enjoy a variety of concentrates while using the same device.

Both wax and dab pen batteries typically have “510- threading” which is the universal threading between batteries, atomizersand cartridges. The typical wax pen charger is usually 510-threaded as well, meaning they will work universally with many different brands and types of batteries.

So, when you are choosing if you want a wax pen vs dab pen there are a few things you should consider. First is the variety of concentrate consistencies you use, whether you typically use prefilled dab cartridges, or if you frequently purchase shatter, budder or other types of concentrates. Wax pens are often a bit more expensive than dab pens, but their additional functions make them a more versatile device.
